What inspired you to do this series?
Marvin Jemal: “The American cityscape is one of the most captivating subjects for an artist. The wide-open spaces to the urban centers of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and other major cities are full of life and energy, as well as beauty and nostalgia. The variety of the cityscape makes it an endlessly attractive subject for paintings.
The city’s diversity is another fascinating aspect of the cityscape. The variety of the subjects and styles are what make the cityscape an interesting challenge for an artist. And the city’s spaces and landmarks are another reason why the cityscape is so interesting to paint. The architecture, parks, bridges, and other landmarks of the cities are different than those in the rural landscape and can add to the appeal of the cityscape”.
What are your favorite paintings from this series?
Marvin Jemal: “My favorite painting from this series is “The Empire State Building”.
The Empire State Building, which was the tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1931, is the iconic skyline of New York City. It is a part of the New York Cityscape that is so important to the city’s identity. The Empire State Building is a part of the painting that is represented in the image, as well as showing the bright blue sky above the building“.

Where do you find inspiration for your paintings?
Marvin Jemal: “Most of my inspiration for my paintings comes from the American cityscape. Understanding the cityscape is the first step to creating a great painting of it. Like all artists, I also look to other subjects for inspiration for my paintings. I try to keep my paintings fresh and interesting, though, by looking to new subjects such as the cityscape”.
What are you working on now?
Marvin Jemal: “I’m working on a new series of paintings about the American cityscape. The series focuses on the American cityscape, from its wide-open spaces to its bustling parks and streets. While I’ve been exploring the abstract side of painting for a while, these new compositions are my most concentrated effort to date”.
